Responding to the earthquake in Nepal

Everyone is aware of the tragic loss of life and terrible destruction caused by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal. More than 7,000 people have died and twice that many were injured.

The devastation in Nepal

We know some people of Providence and our affiliates have lost loved ones there, or have family members trying to cope with the devastation. Our hearts go out to those members of our Providence family and all others who have been affected by this disaster. We will keep the victims and their families in our prayers.

In keeping with our heritage of showing solidarity with those who are suffering, Providence will contribute $25,000 to Catholic Relief Services’ efforts in Nepal. Additionally, we are working with our partners in international service to send medical supplies where they are needed most.

If you are interested in supporting the relief efforts in Nepal, here are three organizations you might want to consider:

  • Catholic Relief Services: CRS has teams in Nepal helping with shelter, blankets, water purification and emergency hygiene kits. A direct donation link has been created for donations to Nepal.
  • Medical Teams International: MTI is one of our partners in Guatemala and one of only five organizations authorized to bring a medical team into the affected area of Nepal.  You may donate to their Nepal fund online.
  • The American Red Cross: ARC is working with Red Cross societies worldwide to bring relief to Nepal. You can make donations online, as well as sign up for email updates on the situation in Nepal.

My personal condolences to all those grieving the loss of a loved one.
