Get to know St. Joseph Health with this video tour

I have really enjoyed getting to know our future new partner St. Joseph Health. It has been great to learn about the organization’s rich heritage and the diverse communities it serves. As you may know, St. Joseph operates 16 hospitals, numerous clinics, outpatient centers and other services in Northern and Southern California, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Recently, my counterpart Annette Walker took a group of us on a tour of St. Joseph ministries in Orange County, Calif.

Orange County is the sixth largest county in America with a population of 3.1 million. St. Joseph is meeting the needs of this dynamic and sizable population with seven acute care ministries and other services, including:

  • St. Joseph Hospital in the city of Orange
  • Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo
  • Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach
  • St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton
  • Hoag Hospital in Irvine
  • Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach
  • St. Mary Medical Center in neighboring San Bernardino County

It was remarkable to learn about the vision of the founders – from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to George Hoag – and to see their work continuing today. Like Providence, each hospital within the St. Joseph system has a distinct culture yet we all come together for a common purpose. As Annette said so well, our diversity is an incredible asset. What unites us all is a mission to serve.

Our diversity is an incredible asset. What unites us all is a mission to serve.

I also learned about a personal experience Annette had with our system. Her 10th grandchild was recently born at Providence Little Company of Mary in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. In the video, she gives a well-deserved shout out to all our caregivers at Little Company for the great experience her family had.

Just to show you what a small world it is, the very day we toured Mission Viejo was the same day my wife went into labor 28 years ago with our daughter Sarah who was born at Mission Hospital. Back then it was a single story hospital. Now it has two incredible towers. It was great to return all these years later and see how much it has grown to meet the needs of the community.

Our tour of Los Angeles County earlier this year

In case you missed it, I took Annette and team on a tour of Providence’s six hospitals in Los Angeles County earlier this year and got a chance to show them the incredible work our caregivers are doing in Burbank, Mission Hills, Santa Monica, San Pedro, Tarzana and Torrance. I’ve visited these ministries many times but it’s always inspiring see the joy, love and passion that our caregivers bring to their work and the patients they serve. It made me very proud to show our St. Joseph colleagues around our ministries. Watch our LA tour below.

  1. Hi Mike,

Great video!!! Just wish Providence/St Joseph would look at “acquiring” Los Robles Hospital, in Thousand Oaks, California. They’re the only option for many of the students attending California Lutheran University, and their reputation is very poor. My daughter had to visit their Emergency Room, and prays she never has to return.

  2. Historically accurate! I live in the High Desert and have seen through the years the progressive growth & culture at St Mary Hospital Medical Center but more importantly on how the mission is being lived out caring for the poor & vulnerable in the community -this affiliation will help & support to do even more. Thanks Mike.

  3. Great video, Mike! I’ve lived in Orange County my whole life so I’m familiar with all the hospitals in the St. Joseph Health system. My family and I have had nothing but great experiences at several of the hospitals. Looking forward to this affiliation! Thanks for sharing the video.
